Paint by Numbers FAQ for Beginners

Answers to the questions people ask most when starting their first paint-by-number kit.

What do I need besides the kit?

Most kits include a numbered canvas, pots of acrylic paint and a few brushes. It helps to add a cup of water, paper towels, good lighting and, for very small areas, a magnifier or fine detail brush.

Which kit should I start with?

Choose a design with larger areas and fewer colors - often labelled beginner or "easy" - and a moderate canvas size. Highly detailed portraits with many colors are better left for later. Read how to choose the right kit for your skill level.

Should I paint dark or light colors first?

Many painters start with darker colors because lighter shades can be harder to cover if you go over a line. Others work from the top of the canvas down to avoid smudging. Try both and see what suits you.

Why can I still see the numbers through the paint?

Light colors often need a second thin coat. Let the first coat dry completely before adding the next. See tips for clean, professional-looking results.

My paint has dried out. What can I do?

Add a drop or two of water, stir well and test on scrap paper. If a color is gone completely, the paint color mixer can help you approximate it from other colors.

How long does a painting take?

Anything from a few hours to several weeks, depending on size, detail and how long you paint each day. Use the project time estimator for a rough plan.

Can I turn my own photo into a pattern?

Yes - try the free pattern generator on our home page to experiment, or read custom paint by numbers from your photos.

How should I protect a finished painting?

Once fully dry, many painters apply a clear acrylic varnish and then frame the canvas. Read framing and displaying your finished art.

Do you sell kits?

No. Painting by Number is an independent hobby site and does not sell kits or supplies.
